Held on Saturday, May 9, the event marked only the second visit by Primum Familiae Vini to Montreal in thirteen years. Founded in 1991, the association unites twelve family-owned wine estates that collectively represent 2,800 years of history across 85 generations. Their shared mission centres on preserving independence, transmitting knowledge, and maintaining uncompromising standards of quality while embracing innovation and sustainability.

An Extraordinary Gathering of Wine Families

From noon onward, 200 guests arrived at the Blue Room of the Ritz-Carlton Montreal for an immersive tasting featuring representatives from legendary houses: Baron Philippe de Rothschild | Domaine Clarence Dillon | Egon Müller Scharzhof | Familia Torres | Famille Hugel | Famille Perrin | Maison Joseph Drouhin | Marchesi Antinori | Pol Roger | Symington Family Estates | Tempos Vega Sicilia | Tenuta San Guido

Conversations moved effortlessly from vineyard practices and climate challenges to family succession and the future of fine wine.

His presence reinforced the spirit of continuity that defines the association and its commitment to preserving family leadership across generations.

A Walk Through the Great Wine Regions of Europe

The tasting unfolded as a journey through Europe’s most celebrated wine regions. Guests explored Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Tuscany, the Douro Valley, Rioja, Alsace, Mosel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and beyond without leaving the salon.

Each estate offered a glimpse into a distinct philosophy shaped by place and history. Some highlighted centuries-old traditions. Others showcased ambitious environmental initiatives and regenerative viticulture projects designed for the decades ahead. Together, they illustrated the core values that unite the families of Primum Familiae Vini: excellence, innovation, responsibility, and stewardship.

A Grand Banquet in the Oval Room

As evening approached, the celebration shifted as some of the guests from the afternoon tasting joined newly arrived attendees for a well-dressed cocktail reception on the Ritz-Carlton’s courtyard terrace.

The room carried a sense of occasion shaped by shared appreciation rather than formality. Family members mingled with guests between courses, continuing conversations that had begun earlier in the day.

The banquet highlighted the human dimension of Primum Familiae Vini. Behind every bottle stood families who view themselves as custodians of a legacy entrusted to future generations. That philosophy has guided the association since its creation following conversations between Robert Drouhin and Miguel Torres about protecting the independence of family-owned estates in a changing global wine industry.

By the end of the evening, the event had delivered far more than a showcase of exceptional wines. SAQ Inspire’s Primum Familiae Vini gathering offered a rare opportunity to encounter the people, histories, and values behind some of the world’s most celebrated estates, all within the refined setting of the Ritz-Carlton Montreal.
