As Ferreira Café Trattoria marks its 30th anniversary on April 1st, the Peel Street institution reveals a full transformation that signals both continuity and renewal. Established in 1996, Ferreira has long stood as a reference for Portuguese gastronomy in Montreal. This latest chapter introduces a redesigned environment that aligns with its enduring identity while projecting confidence into the years ahead.

Under the direction of CEO Sandra Ferreira, the project reflects a deliberate vision. The objective centers on longevity, coherence, and a faithful interpretation of the restaurant’s heritage. The renovation touches every element of the space, from the dining room to the private salons, creating an atmosphere that feels cohesive, luminous, and rooted in memory.

A Mediterranean Spirit with Portuguese Roots
Artistic director Jean-François Gervais conceived the new design as an invitation to travel. Developed in collaboration with EXTRA Architecture & Design and construction partner NORCAM, the concept draws from Portuguese landscapes and domestic warmth. The result evokes a contemporary Mediterranean sensibility enriched with rustic textures and precise craftsmanship.

Materials define the experience. Solid wood, natural stone, and crafted metal establish a tactile dialogue across the room. Light plays a central role, with softened ceilings and exposed wooden beams opening the space and enhancing its sense of volume. The integration of these elements produces a setting that feels both grounded and elevated.

A symbolic structure anchors the narrative. A small house with terracotta tiles sourced near Estarreja, the birthplace of founder Carlos Ferreira, introduces a personal dimension. It functions as a visual homage, connecting the Montreal dining room to its Portuguese origins with clarity and intention.

Spaces Designed for Gathering
The transformation extends to the restaurant’s private spaces, aligning them with contemporary expectations. The Ferreira Private Room now accommodates up to 64 seated guests or 120 for a cocktail reception, with a renewed focus on comfort and flexibility.

The Rosa Private Room introduces updated audiovisual capabilities and a brighter layout suited for both professional meetings and intimate gatherings. These changes show a deeper understanding of modern guest behavior, with each space designed for varied experiences while preserving the same high standards as the main dining area.

Honouring Signature Elements
While the design evolves, Ferreira preserves the elements that define its identity. The iconic wall of broken plates remains in place, offering a tangible link to decades of shared moments.

Behind the bar, a hand painted mural created by Portuguese azulejo artisans continues to depict Porto and its wine heritage.

Another mural of swallow birds reinforces themes of loyalty and homecoming, values deeply embedded in Portuguese culture. These details function as anchors within the new design, ensuring that the transformation remains connected to the restaurant’s history.

At the heart of the dining room, the redesigned stone fish display stands as a focal point. It presents line caught fish flown in daily from the Portuguese coast, emphasizing freshness and precision. This installation reinforces Ferreira’s commitment to product quality and transparency.

A Future Built on Consistency
Ferreira’s evolution arrives with recognition already in place, including a recommendation in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide. The anniversary underscores a rare continuity in Montreal’s dining landscape, where the restaurant has maintained rigorous standards in both cuisine and service.

The transformation affirms this trajectory. It introduces a renewed environment that supports the same culinary philosophy while enhancing the guest experience. Ferreira continues to operate as a family driven enterprise, guided by values of respect, discipline, and generosity.

As it enters its fourth decade, Ferreira presents a space that feels aligned with its past and prepared for its future. The restaurant stands as a destination shaped by memory, design, and a clear sense of purpose.

We would be remiss if we did not thank Rosalie Pelletier of Brouillard RP for the gracious invitation to visit Ferreira Café Trattoria and experience a delicious tasting menu in the redesigned dining room. Our sincere appreciation also goes to Carlos Ferreira, for the warm welcome, and to his staff, waiters Keiran and Anne-Marie, and maître d’hôtel Caroline, whose polished, attentive service elevated the evening from memorable to excepcional.
