TIM ZYTO’S PICKS IN HONOUR OF GLAMADA

For Montauk founder, Tim Zyto, comfort isn’t a feature. It’s the foundation.

Long before Montauk Sofa became synonymous with oversized, sink-in seating and luxury interiors so well suited to this Glamada themed edition, Zyto was already learning the craft.

“I was about 13 when production manager Bruno Tigani taught me how to upholster at my father’s company,” he recalls. Decades later, Bruno is still part of the Montauk team — a testament to the longevity that defines the brand itself.

When Zyto launched Montauk in 1995, much of the market leaned toward structured furniture. Zyto went the other way, introducing spacious, deep-seated sofas designed for comfort, made with more wood, metal and feather filling than most. His vision was clear: “The kind of sofa you could jump into on Friday night and stay in until Monday morning.” The brand brings a sense of fashion and playfulness to everything it does, from advertising to showrooms, architecture and product design.

Nearly 32 years later, that philosophy still holds. Montauk sofas are deliberately oversized, built to soften over time without losing their shape. “The more you push down on the sofa, the more it pushes you back up,” he says, likening the experience to breaking in a good pair of jeans. They’re not precious; in fact, they’re made to be jumped on. And if you’ve ever woken up on one after a late night, Zyto would argue that’s part of the point. “We’ve all had times when the sofa becomes your place, so it has to be comfortable.”

Customization is another brand cornerstone. From seat depth to leg style to fabric, each piece is designed to adapt to its owner. For Zyto, a sofa isn’t one-size-fits-all, which is why customers are encouraged to visit Montauk showrooms. “Everyone is different, so we want people to come in, sit on the sofas and really understand what they like. From there, we can adjust to fit their needs.”

Today, Montauk continues to grow without sacrificing quality. It’s an effort shared by dedicated team members, including longtime head designer, Danny Chartier who also handles creative direction. “Everyone on our team plays an important role,” says Zyto, “whether it’s the person upholstering, sewing, delivering or selling. If somebody doesn’t do their job properly, it affects the sofa.” The brand recently completed a new Toronto showroom and is eyeing another store in the US, all while exploring e-commerce options for the future.

Still, Zyto remains firm on one point: ideally, you experience a Montauk before ever buying one. Because at the end of the day, your sofa isn’t just furniture — it’s where life happens.

AUDREY
Audrey is a bit more playful, with a rounded and almost sculptural frame.” Softer in silhouette, it brings a more modern edge to the lineup while still delivering the deep, lived-in comfort Montauk is known for.

JANE
“Most outdoor furniture is some kind of a steel or wood frame with cushions that sit on top, but we wanted our outdoor sofa to be as comfortable as an indoor one.” Fully upholstered in durable, washable fabric, Jane delivers the same sink-in comfort outdoors as Montauk’s interioR pieces.

ROXANNE
“Seeing that a celebration of glamour is at the heart of this Glamada themed issue, we did want to include Roxanne, which is the epitome of glam with its curved aesthetic that pairs so beautifully with the Frank Coffee Table.”

MONTAUK
“This is where it all started. Our first sofa sample was constructed in-house by just the original four of us: Danny, Bruno, Antoine and myself.” The timeless Montauk slipcovered sofa feels as relevant today as it did in 1995. Washable covers can be swapped seasonally or as life demands, making it ideal for homes with kids, pets, or both.

ANTOINE
Sometimes clients even take indoor designs like Antoine outdoors, captured here outside the Montauk Montreal showroom on Saint Laurent Boulevard.
