Anna Justen, the American-Canadian alternative and indie singer-songwriter, music producer, artist, and model (talk about a multi hyphenate!) graciously chatted with us about how music helps bring people together.

1. What’s the hardest part about being a musician?
“I think there are a few hard parts about being a musician. First of all, sometimes I struggle with bouts of self doubt. There is no clear path towards being able to support yourself off music, so sometimes I feel lost and nervous I won’t be able to make and do everything I’d like to. Another thing that is challenging about making music is finding the money to support my project and my vision. All of my income, besides paying for rent and groceries, goes into my music. Sometimes that feels really exhausting and challenging.”
2. Why is it important to make music?
“Making art of any kind is so important for humans. I think music in particular is such a beautiful and moving way to fill time, and it has such a direct route to people’s souls. One of the reasons music feels so karmically important to create for me in particular is that it feels like part of breaking some sort of generational trauma. I feel like I come from a line of women who were unable to express themselves freely, so it just feels necessary to use my voice and express my truth, even though it’s sometimes not pretty or challenges me. I also just love how it feels to make music. It is all I love to do. It feels like I am channeling something through me so that it’s able to exist in a comprehensible form. It is a really special feeling.”

3. Who are you inspired by in your upcoming projects?
“As I’ve been working on my debut album, which came out on May 8th, I have been feeling especially inspired by artists like Rosalia, Saya Gray, James Blake, and Bon Iver. I have also felt inspired by songwriters like Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo.”

4. Do you perform on stage?
“I do! I love playing shows. I have a band here in Montreal, as well as a band in Seattle. I’m still learning about how to play a good show, and definitely have room to grow!”
