DR. TAMMY GAFOOR

HEALING, GIVING, INSPIRING

They say it’s easier to write about someone you know well, who also happens to be a precious friend. But to be honest, it’s actually considerably more challenging because, well, “word counts” don’t gel well with all I have to say about the extraordinary Dr. Tammy Gafoor.

Having met by chance over a decade ago (she and her equally amazing doctor husband, Olumide, were attending the Montreal Children’s Ball which I was covering for the Montreal Gazette), a unique bond was formed from the opening line: “Can we get a shot of you for the paper?”

Ever since, our paths have crossed in beautiful and meaningful ways, and l’ve been lucky enough to have both a front row seat to, as well as to take part in, some of Tammy’s incredible and inspiring initiatives to date.

Where to start? Well, many know her by day as a remarkable pediatric emergency physician at the Children’s, where her impeccable skills as a doctor (she’s director of the MUHC Pediatric Advanced Life Support Resuscitation Program and an assistant professor at McGill University) are outshone only by her warm and calming bedside manner that immediately puts children and adults alike at ease.

Others, like myself, who count among her original board members, have been endlessly inspired by her role as founder of More Than a Cure (MTAC), an impressive non-profit that supports women and men with breast cancer facing financial challenges through critical assistance, resources, and a compassionate community, helping them navigate treatment and recovery with confidence, hope, and dignity.

The initiative is especially meaningful, as it was born from her own experience as a breast cancer survivor and a deep desire to give back to the community and support others on their respective journeys.

Oh, and did I mention, this doctor can dance? Because she can, and does, often with her husband, who now and again makes a memorable cameo on her socials.
